Bi-colour lighting cannot replace colour grading in post-production, and it should not try to.

What is the difference between lighting colour and colour grading?
Lighting and grading influence colour at completely different stages of the image pipeline.
Lighting determines what wavelengths actually reach the subject and, ultimately, the camera sensor.
Colour grading works with the image data captured by that sensor.
This means grading is extraordinarily powerful, but it cannot literally recreate light that was never captured correctly in the first place.
A good on-set colour workflow therefore gives post-production better information rather than attempting to replace it.
What does bi-colour lighting actually control?
A bi-colour fixture allows the operator to adjust the correlated colour temperature of the white light across a specified range.
That can be useful when:
- matching daylight;
- working around tungsten practicals;
- balancing different areas of a location;
- creating warm/cool separation;
- or maintaining a consistent lighting reference across several setups.
The important point is that the Kelvin setting is only one part of the final image.
Camera white balance, spectral quality, exposure, contrast, surrounding practicals and the final grade all influence how that light ultimately appears.
Does setting the correct Kelvin value mean the footage is colour-correct?
No.
This is one of the most common misunderstandings around tunable-white lighting.
A fixture set to 5600K and a camera set to 5600K do not automatically produce a finished or perfectly neutral image.
First, the actual spectral distribution of the light matters.
Second, other sources in the scene may have completely different spectra and colour temperatures.
Third, the camera itself has its own colour response.
And finally, the creative intention may not be neutral at all.
Kelvin is a useful reference, not a substitute for colour management.
Why can two lights at the same Kelvin value still look different?
Because CCT describes only the approximate white point of the source.
It does not describe the entire spectrum.
Two fixtures can both measure around 5600K while reproducing skin, fabric or saturated colours differently.
This is why colour-critical productions should look beyond CCT alone and consider metrics such as:
- CRI for broad colour-rendering performance;
- R9 for saturated red reproduction;
- TLCI for camera-oriented colour evaluation;
- and, where available, more detailed spectral measurements.
For the colourist, spectral consistency can be more important than the fact that two fixtures display the same Kelvin number.
Can poor spectral quality be fixed in post?
Only to a point.
A white-balance error can often be corrected very effectively.
A weak or uneven spectrum is different.
If a light source reproduces certain wavelengths poorly, the camera may never receive an accurate representation of those colours in the first place.
Post-production can shift hue, saturation and luminance, but it cannot always reconstruct colour relationships that were never captured faithfully.
This becomes particularly relevant with:
- skin;
- makeup;
- fashion;
- food;
- paint;
- product colours;
- and highly saturated materials.
Good lighting therefore protects the quality of the information entering the post-production pipeline.
What does colour correction actually do?
The phrase “colour grading” is often used to describe several different processes.
In a typical workflow, one part of the process involves technical correction:
- matching cameras;
- balancing exposure;
- correcting unwanted colour casts;
- matching shots filmed at different times;
- and bringing footage into a consistent working colour space.
Then comes the more creative stage, where the colourist shapes:
- contrast;
- colour relationships;
- skin tone treatment;
- highlight and shadow character;
- saturation;
- and the overall emotional feel of the project.
Good lighting helps the first part become cleaner. It does not remove the second part.
Why should productions still grade beautifully lit footage?
Because grading is not simply repair work.
A beautifully lit image may still need:
- shot-to-shot matching;
- contrast shaping;
- selective colour work;
- a show LUT or display transform;
- skin isolation;
- highlight management;
- and a creative look that unifies the project.
The better the capture, the more freedom the colourist has to make those decisions creatively rather than defensively.
I think that is the right relationship between lighting and grading.
Can good bi-colour lighting reduce corrective work?
Yes, absolutely.
Imagine a multi-day commercial shoot where every interview setup is meant to have the same neutral white-light environment.
If the lighting is stable, documented and repeatable, each new setup begins closer to the previous one.
If the sources drift, mismatch or behave unpredictably at different dimming levels, the post team needs to compensate for those differences.
The benefit of good lighting is therefore not that grading disappears.
It is that unnecessary variables disappear.
Why consistency matters more than “perfect” colour temperature
There is rarely one universally correct Kelvin setting.
A scene may be intentionally warm. Another may deliberately contain warm and cool sources simultaneously.
What matters is that those decisions are controlled and repeatable.
A consistent lighting environment allows the colourist to understand what was intentional.
An inconsistent environment forces the colourist to guess.
Should every light on set be the same colour temperature?
No.
Mixed colour temperatures can be one of the most beautiful tools in cinematography.
A warm practical in the background and a more neutral key can create depth. Cool window light against a warmer interior can establish time of day. A subtle colour difference between key and edge light can separate the subject without any saturated RGB effect.
The issue is not whether the sources match.
The issue is whether they differ intentionally.
How does bi-colour lighting help with mixed environments?
This is one of its greatest strengths.
Suppose you are filming an interview in a room containing daylight from a window and warmer practical fixtures.
A tunable-white source lets you decide where the subject should sit between those two environments.
You might:
- match the window;
- match the practicals;
- choose an intermediate white point;
- or deliberately create separation from both.
The important thing is that the choice happens on set, where you can evaluate the actual interaction of light, skin and environment.
Should the camera white balance always match the fixture?
No.
Matching them produces a relatively neutral interpretation of that source, but that is only one creative option.
If the fixture is set to 3200K and the camera is balanced around 4300K, that source will appear warmer.
If the camera is balanced to 3200K, the same source will appear much more neutral.
This relationship is one reason I prefer thinking of CCT and white balance together rather than treating Kelvin as an absolute visual look.
What about LOG and RAW?
LOG and RAW make the idea that lighting can “replace grading” particularly misleading.
LOG footage is deliberately encoded in a way that preserves dynamic range and generally requires a transform or grade to look finished.
RAW gives even greater flexibility in interpreting the captured sensor data.
Neither format becomes presentation-ready simply because the lights were excellent.
What good lighting does is give those formats cleaner and more consistent scene information to work with.
A LUT or colour-management transform can then operate on footage that was captured under deliberate conditions rather than trying to compensate for inconsistent lighting from shot to shot.
Why camera matching still matters
Even under perfectly stable lighting, two different cameras may render the same scene differently.
Different sensor spectral responses, colour matrices, picture profiles and lenses can all influence colour.
So a multi-camera production may still require matching even when every fixture on set is behaving perfectly.
This is another reason grading cannot simply be removed from the pipeline.
What should you record on set for the colourist?
For colour-critical productions, I would document more than just the fixture model.
Useful information can include:
- fixture CCT;
- dimming level;
- camera white balance;
- camera profile or recording format;
- modifier used;
- important practical sources;
- and colour or neutral reference frames.
This can make matching later setups considerably easier.
Why a colour chart can be more useful than a grey card
A grey card gives the colourist a neutral reference.
That is useful, but a colour chart provides much more information.
It allows several known colours to be compared against the recorded result, helping reveal differences that a neutral patch alone cannot show.
For product, beauty, fashion and commercial work, this can be particularly useful.
Can changing CCT on set replace creative grading?
No.
A warmer source and a warmer grade are not the same thing.
Changing the light changes the spectrum that physically illuminates the subject and changes how different surfaces respond.
Grading modifies the recorded image after those interactions have already happened.
Both can influence the emotional tone, but they do so at fundamentally different stages.
This is precisely why lighting choices remain meaningful even in an era of extremely powerful colour-grading tools.
When should you create the look on set?
As much as is useful and practical.
I personally prefer giving the camera an image that already reflects the intended direction rather than relying on post-production to invent everything later.
That does not mean baking the final grade irreversibly into the footage.
It means creating deliberate:
- light direction;
- contrast;
- colour relationships;
- source motivation;
- and exposure.
Then the colourist has something coherent to refine.

So, can bi-colour lighting replace colour grading?
No.
And that is not a limitation of bi-colour lighting.
Lighting and grading have different jobs.
Good tunable-white lighting helps you create intentional, repeatable colour relationships at capture. Colour grading then takes that material and transforms it into a coherent final image.
The better the lighting, the better the starting point.
But grading remains an essential part of professional post-production, especially for LOG, RAW, multi-camera and creatively graded projects.
The goal is not to avoid grading. It is to avoid unnecessary repair.
That is the distinction I would keep in mind.
A colourist should be using their time to improve the image, not trying to understand why two supposedly identical lights produced different results from one setup to the next.
Good lighting creates consistency at the source.
Good grading creates consistency and intention in the final image.
The strongest production workflows use both.

No. LOG and RAW provide greater post-production flexibility, but they still record the light that reached the sensor. Good spectral quality and controlled colour relationships remain important because post-production can only work with the captured information.
What is the simplest way to improve colour consistency before post-production?
Lock the camera white balance intentionally, keep fixture settings documented, use stable light sources and capture a neutral or colour reference under the final lighting setup. These steps give the post-production team a much clearer and more repeatable starting point.
Can high-quality lighting reduce grading time?
