A professional interview does not require a complicated lighting setup. It requires a clear idea of what you want the subject to look like, an understanding of the light already present in the room, and enough control to shape the image intentionally.
Three-point lighting is still a useful framework, but I would not treat it as a formula. Sometimes three lights are exactly what the scene needs. Sometimes two are enough. Sometimes a window, one carefully placed key light and a piece of negative fill can produce a much more convincing image.
The goal is not to use a certain number of fixtures. The goal is to create shape on the face, separation from the environment and a visual hierarchy that keeps attention on the person speaking.

Is three-point lighting still the best setup for interviews?
Three-point lighting is one of the most useful concepts to learn because it separates the job of lighting a person into three simple functions:
- Key light: establishes the main direction and character of the light on the face.
- Fill light: controls how much contrast remains on the shadow side.
- Backlight or edge light: helps separate the subject from the background.
But these are functions, not necessarily three physical fixtures.
A white wall can provide fill. A window can become the key. A practical lamp in the background can contribute separation. Negative fill can sometimes be more useful than adding another source.
When I arrive at an interview location, I rarely start by thinking, “I need three lights.” I first look at what the room is already giving me. Where are the windows? What practical lamps are visible? What direction feels natural? What part of the room would make the best background?
Only then do I decide what additional light is actually necessary.
Start with the room, not with the lighting kit
One of the biggest differences between studio lighting and location interview work is that the location already has a lighting environment.
Instead of immediately fighting it, I find it more useful to make one of three decisions:
1. Use the existing light
If a large window is already producing beautiful directional light, it may become part of the setup rather than something to eliminate.
You might simply soften it with diffusion, control the opposite side of the face with negative fill, and introduce one additional fixture for consistency or exposure.
2. Control the existing light
Sometimes the room has useful light, but too much of it.
Windows can be diffused or flagged. Overhead fixtures can often be switched off. Curtains can reduce daylight. Practical lamps can be dimmed or repositioned.
Good interview lighting is frequently as much about removing unwanted light as adding new light.
3. Replace the existing light
In difficult spaces, it can be easier to suppress or overpower the ambient light and build a controlled setup of your own.
This is where having enough output becomes particularly valuable, especially when working near windows or through large diffusion.
How should you position the key light for an interview?
The familiar advice is to place the key approximately 45 degrees to one side of the subject and slightly above eye level. That is a perfectly useful starting point, but I would think in terms of what the light is doing to the face rather than trying to reproduce a particular angle.
Moving the key farther to the side increases modelling and contrast. Bringing it closer to the camera produces a flatter, more frontal appearance. Raising it changes the shadows beneath the eyes, nose and chin.
For many corporate interviews, a large soft source positioned relatively close to the subject produces an attractive combination of softness and directionality.
But soft light should not mean flat light.
I usually still want to see a clear difference between the illuminated side of the face and the shadow side. That transition is what gives the face volume.
Do corporate interviews always need soft light?
No.
Soft light is popular because it is forgiving, comfortable for the subject and works well across many different faces. It also makes small changes in position less critical during a long interview.
But there is nothing inherently more professional about soft light.
A smaller or more directional source can create stronger facial modelling, sharper shadows and a more editorial or cinematic feeling. That can be completely appropriate for executives, designers, artists, craftspeople or anyone whose story benefits from a stronger visual character.
The important principle is that softness is determined primarily by the apparent size of the source relative to the subject.
A compact LED placed inside a large softbox or reflective umbrella can become a very large soft source. The same fixture fitted with a reflector or Fresnel can produce something much harder and more directional.
This is why I tend to think of the fixture as the engine and the modifier as the tool that determines the character of the light.
How much fill should you use?
There is no ideal key-to-fill ratio for every corporate interview.
A bright, welcoming communication piece may benefit from relatively open shadows. A more cinematic interview may look much better with considerably more contrast.
And importantly, fill does not always require another light.
You can use:
- a white reflector;
- a nearby wall;
- ambient light already present in the room;
- a second fixture at very low intensity;
- or no additional fill at all.
Sometimes I do the opposite and place black fabric or a flag on the shadow side of the subject. This negative fill absorbs ambient bounce and creates more definition on the face.
That can be one of the quickest ways to make an ordinary office location feel considerably more controlled.
Do you really need a backlight?
No. Separation from the background is important, but a dedicated hair light is only one way to achieve it.
The subject can also be separated through:
- brightness contrast;
- colour contrast;
- depth of field;
- background composition;
- practical lights;
- distance between the subject and background;
- or an edge light coming from a motivated direction.
This matters because a backlight added simply because “interviews need a backlight” can sometimes look artificial.
If there is a window or lamp behind the subject, an edge light coming from that direction can feel completely natural. If the scene already has enough separation, adding another source may do nothing except make the setup more complicated.
I would rather have two lights that each have a clear purpose than four lights that are there because a diagram told me to use them.
What colour temperature should you use for an interview?
There is no universal “corporate” colour temperature.
5600K is not inherently more professional than 3200K, and mixed colour temperatures are not automatically a mistake.
The correct question is: how do you want the subject to relate to the light already present in the room?
If daylight from a window is dominating the space, you may choose to bring your key light close to that ambient colour temperature. In a warm interior, you might move toward the practical lamps instead.
But you can also deliberately keep the two different.
For example, I often like a relatively neutral key on the face while allowing practical lamps in the background to remain warmer. That difference creates natural colour separation and helps the image feel layered.
The important distinction is between mixed colour by accident and mixed colour by intention.
A bi-colour fixture gives you the freedom to make that decision on location rather than being locked into a fixed white point.
Should you match every light to exactly the same Kelvin value?
Not necessarily, and even identical Kelvin values do not guarantee an identical colour match.
Two fixtures can both be set to 5600K and still reproduce colours differently because colour temperature describes only the approximate white point, not the complete spectrum of the light.
This is where colour rendering becomes important.
For interviews, particularly when skin tones are involved, I pay attention not only to CCT but also to metrics such as R9 and TLCI. A light can have the right Kelvin setting and still render skin poorly if the underlying spectrum is incomplete or uneven.

How do you create depth in a corporate interview?
Lighting the face correctly is only half the job. The background is what turns an illuminated person into an image.
Whenever possible, I try to move the subject away from the wall behind them. Physical depth gives you more control over focus, exposure and background lighting.
Then I look for layers.
A foreground element, a practical lamp, a brighter patch of background, architectural lines or a subtle difference in colour temperature can all help create visual depth.
You do not necessarily need to light the whole room.
Often one small pool of light on the background is enough to create separation and give the frame a sense of intention.
How many lights do you actually need for a professional interview?
Sometimes one.
Very often two.
Three can give you greater control. Four or more become useful when you start shaping the background independently, adding practical accents or lighting multiple subjects.
But the number itself tells you nothing about the quality of the image.
One of the simplest interview setups I like is:
- a large, soft key;
- negative fill on the opposite side;
- and an existing practical or small controlled source in the background.
Technically that may only involve one serious fixture on the subject, yet it can look much more sophisticated than an indiscriminate three-point setup.
Interview lighting on location: what actually matters?
Location work introduces a different set of priorities from a permanent studio.
Equipment has to move quickly. Power may not be where you need it. The room may change halfway through the day. A beautiful window at 9:00 in the morning may become unusable two hours later.
For that reason, I value a few things enormously in location fixtures:
- Low weight, because lights are constantly repositioned.
- Battery operation, so the location does not dictate where the fixture can go.
- Wide bi-colour adjustment, because every room is different.
- Enough output for diffusion and for competing with ambient light.
- Quiet cooling, because an interview is also an audio recording.
- Modifier compatibility, so the same fixture can quickly become soft, hard or tightly controlled.
The best location light is not simply the smallest one. It is the one that removes friction from the production.

Not every interview needs a very powerful light.
But high output becomes valuable when you are working against strong daylight, placing the fixture farther from the subject, using very large modifiers or pushing through heavier diffusion.
In those situations, Maxima Furiosa gives you substantially more lighting headroom.
I think of that extra output less as “brightness” and more as permission to waste light creatively.
If you have enough power, you can diffuse more heavily, increase the source size, move the light farther away or compete with windows without immediately running out of exposure.
Common interview lighting mistakes
The mistakes I see most often are not usually caused by having the wrong fixture. They are caused by approaching the room without a clear visual intention.
- Putting the subject directly against a wall. This removes depth and makes background control much harder.
- Using soft light without direction. A large source can still create shape. Soft does not have to mean flat.
- Adding a backlight automatically. Separation should solve a visual problem, not satisfy a lighting diagram.
- Trying to eliminate every mixed colour temperature. Colour differences can create useful depth when they are intentional.
- Ignoring negative fill. Removing unwanted bounce can sometimes improve a face more than adding another fixture.
- Lighting the person without thinking about the background. The environment is part of the portrait.
- Overcomplicating the setup. Every light should have a reason to exist.
My approach to lighting a professional interview
If I had to reduce the entire process to a practical sequence, it would be this:
- Choose the background before setting up the lights.
- Study the existing light and decide what is worth keeping.
- Place the subject far enough from the background to create depth.
- Build the key light and shape the face first.
- Decide whether the shadow side needs fill, negative fill or nothing.
- Evaluate separation before automatically adding a backlight.
- Shape the background only where the composition needs it.
- Remove anything that does not improve the image.
That final step is important.
Interview lighting becomes much easier once you stop thinking of professionalism as the number of fixtures on the floor.
The best setups often feel simple because every element has a clear job.
The best interview lighting is the lighting that disappears
A good corporate interview should not make the viewer think about the lighting setup.
It should make the subject feel present, dimensional and believable. The environment should support the story without competing with it, and the technical decisions should disappear behind the person speaking.
That may require one light or five.
The important part is understanding why each source is there, what it contributes, and whether the image would actually be worse without it.
For me, that is a much more useful way to think about interview lighting than memorising a three-point diagram.
