What matters is whether the lighting system can reproduce products accurately, shape reflections predictably, remain consistent across hundreds of images, and adapt quickly when the subject changes from a small cosmetic bottle to a handbag, a piece of furniture or a full-length garment.

Why calling every professional LED a “panel” misses the point

LED panels became popular because they provide a relatively broad source directly from the fixture. They can be useful, especially in confined spaces or when a simple soft-ish source is all that is required.

But the physical shape of the fixture should not determine the lighting design.

A compact monolight-style LED source can be placed inside a large softbox, bounced into a reflector, focused with a Fresnel, fired through diffusion or used directly as a harder source.

That makes the same fixture capable of producing dramatically different light.

This matters enormously in product photography because different objects require different reflection strategies.

A matte cardboard package, a chrome watch, a bottle of perfume and a black leather handbag should not necessarily be lit with the same apparent source.

For reflective products, you are often photographing the reflection of the light

This is one of the most important principles in product photography.

When photographing glossy or reflective materials, the camera is often not simply recording how brightly the object is illuminated. It is recording the reflection of the source itself.

Glass, polished metal, glossy plastic, jewellery, bottles and lacquered surfaces all reveal the shape and position of the light around them.

A larger diffusion surface can create a broader, smoother reflection. A narrow strip source can produce a controlled highlight running along the edge of a bottle. A harder source can reveal texture or create a sharper specular accent.

This is why the statement that a softbox simply “reduces reflections” is misleading.

Softboxes do not eliminate specular reflections. They change their size, shape, brightness and transition.

In many product photographs, those reflections are not a problem to remove. They are the very thing that gives the object shape.

What colour specifications matter for e-commerce photography?

Colour fidelity is particularly important when the image is intended to represent something a customer may purchase without ever seeing the physical product first.

Skin tone is not the only difficult subject for an LED spectrum. Fabrics, paints, plastics, cosmetics, food, leather and dyes can all behave unexpectedly under incomplete or irregular light sources.

CRI is therefore useful, but it should not be the only metric considered.

Professional photographers should look at:

  • CRI or Ra
  • extended CRI values
  • R9 saturated-red reproduction
  • TLCI for camera-oriented performance
  • spectral distribution where available
  • colour consistency between fixtures
  • white-point stability while dimming

A very high average CRI does not guarantee that every colour will reproduce identically, because traditional CRI averages only a limited selection of test colours.

This becomes particularly relevant with reds, cosmetics, skin-adjacent colours and deeply saturated fabrics.

The complete colour pipeline matters.

  • manual white balance;
  • a grey reference;
  • a colour checker captured under the actual lighting;
  • a consistent camera profile;
  • a calibrated editing monitor;
  • a controlled export colour space;
  • consistent studio lighting conditions between sessions.

The colour chart should be photographed in the same lighting environment as the product rather than under a completely different reference source.

It is also worth remembering that colour profiling can correct the response of the camera-light combination, but it cannot magically recreate spectral information that the original light never produced.

Good lighting gives the colour-management workflow better information to begin with.

Why product photography is especially vulnerable to metamerism

Two objects can appear to have the same colour under one light source and look different under another. This phenomenon is known as metamerism.

It becomes particularly relevant in commercial photography because modern products contain complex dyes, pigments, synthetic textiles, printed inks and coatings.

A blue fabric and blue piece of packaging may appear perfectly matched under daylight but separate noticeably under an LED source with a different spectral distribution.

This is another reason why simply setting a fixture to “5,600K” does not guarantee accurate product colour.

Colour temperature describes the broad warm-to-cool character of white light. It does not describe the complete spectrum producing that white.

For colour-critical catalogue work, spectral quality matters.

Is bi-colour lighting the best choice for product photography?

Sometimes. Not always.

Bi-colour lighting is extremely useful when the studio needs to adapt to changing environments, match existing practical sources or move between daylight and warmer interior conditions.

If the majority of your work involves accurate white-light catalogue photography, a dedicated daylight or bi-colour fixture can provide a simpler and potentially more efficient architecture for the job.

If you regularly create stylised campaign photography or product films using saturated colour, a high-quality RGB system may justify the added complexity.

How much output does product photography actually require?

There is no meaningful universal lumen requirement.

A small watch photographed from 50 centimetres away through a modest diffusion panel requires something very different from a full-length fashion mannequin lit through a two-metre source.

The amount of light required depends on:

  • size of the product;
  • working distance;
  • modifier size;
  • modifier transmission losses;
  • camera ISO;
  • desired aperture;
  • depth-of-field requirements;
  • whether stills and video are being captured;
  • ambient light in the studio.

Product photographers often work at relatively small apertures because additional depth of field is useful when photographing three-dimensional objects.

Large diffusion surfaces can also absorb a substantial amount of light.

So while a tiny tabletop setup may require surprisingly little output, larger catalogue environments can benefit greatly from a more powerful fixture.

Why efficiency matters more than wattage

This is particularly relevant when comparing modern professional LEDs.

Wattage measures electrical consumption. It does not measure useful photographic output.

A 500W fixture is not automatically more powerful than a 300W fixture.

What about polarisation for reflective products?

Polarisation can be extremely useful when photographing certain reflective materials.

A circular polariser on the camera can reduce some reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as glass, painted surfaces and plastics.

For more advanced setups, photographers may use cross-polarisation, placing polarising material over the light source and a polariser on the camera lens.

This can dramatically suppress surface glare and reveal underlying colour or texture.

However, polarisation is not universally desirable.

Specular highlights often communicate shape, gloss and material quality. Removing them completely can make a polished object look unnaturally flat.

As with diffusion, the objective is not to eliminate reflections automatically. It is to control them deliberately.

Why modifier compatibility affects the real price of a light

A professional light is rarely purchased alone.

Over time, photographers accumulate softboxes, reflectors, beauty dishes, umbrellas, grids and other light-shaping tools. That modifier collection may ultimately cost more than the fixture itself.
