Choosing between a Fresnel LED and a panel LED for a studio interview is not really about deciding which fixture is universally better.
The two tools start from different optical characteristics. A panel gives you a relatively broad emitting surface from the fixture itself, while a Fresnel gives you a more directional beam that can be focused and controlled. But once you begin adding diffusion, softboxes, reflectors and flags, the difference becomes less about the name of the fixture and more about what kind of source you want the subject to see.
For interview lighting, I would therefore choose according to the required softness, directionality, working distance, spill control and the amount of flexibility I want from the fixture.

What is the real difference between a Fresnel LED and a panel LED?
The simplest distinction is optical.
A panel LED spreads its emitters across a larger physical area, so the bare fixture already behaves as a relatively broad source. Depending on its size and distance from the subject, that can produce softer transitions than a small point-source fixture used without modification.
A Fresnel LED uses an optical system to create a more directional beam. Traditional Fresnel optics allow the beam to move between spot and flood, giving the operator control over beam angle, throw and spill.
That makes a Fresnel particularly useful when you need to place light precisely or work at greater distances.
But there is an important point that often gets lost in these comparisons:
A panel is not automatically soft, and a Fresnel is not automatically hard.
The final softness of the light depends primarily on the apparent size of the source relative to the subject.
What actually determines whether interview light is hard or soft?
A large source close to the subject produces softer shadow transitions. A small source, or the same source positioned much farther away, produces harder transitions.
That means a panel can still look relatively hard if it is small and placed far from the subject.
Likewise, a directional point-source fixture can become extremely soft when it is used through a large diffusion frame, reflective umbrella or softbox.
This is one of the reasons I prefer thinking about fixtures as lighting engines rather than fixed visual looks.
The modifier and distance often have more influence over the final image than whether the fixture started life as a panel or a Fresnel.
When does a panel LED make sense for an interview?
Panels are particularly useful when speed, a relatively broad source and simple setup are priorities.
They can work very well for:
- small studios where working distances are limited;
- relatively soft front or three-quarter lighting;
- fill light;
- multiple-subject interviews;
- quick corporate setups where the subject may move slightly;
- and situations where a compact broad source is easier to position than a fixture plus a large modifier.
A large panel placed fairly close to the subject can produce a clean, forgiving key light with very little setup time.
That can be valuable when you are filming several interviews in succession or working in an environment where there is simply not enough space for a large softbox or diffusion frame.
When does a Fresnel LED make sense?
A Fresnel becomes particularly useful when control matters more than broad coverage.
Typical situations include:
- keeping the key light away from the background;
- working from a greater distance;
- creating a motivated shaft or directional source;
- building a harder, more editorial interview look;
- creating edge or background light;
- or controlling spill in a small studio.
The ability to focus the beam means you can place light more deliberately without illuminating everything around the subject.
For darker or more cinematic interviews, that control can be extremely useful.
Is a Fresnel always better as the key light?
No.
This is one of the assumptions I would avoid.
A Fresnel can make a beautiful interview key, especially if you want stronger directionality or are using it through diffusion. But a panel can also be an excellent key if the visual style calls for broad, soft illumination.
Likewise, a Fresnel can make a great fill, background or edge light. A panel can light a background or create an ambient wash.
The fixture does not know what role it has been assigned.
The better question is: what job does this source need to perform in the image?
Should you use a Fresnel directly on the face?
Sometimes, yes.
A direct Fresnel can produce beautiful facial modelling when you want visible structure and a more defined shadow pattern.
It can work particularly well for interviews with artists, craftspeople, executives or documentary subjects where a slightly stronger visual character feels appropriate.
But for a softer corporate look, I would more often use the fixture indirectly or through a larger modifier.
For example, you can:
- push it through diffusion;
- bounce it into a reflective surface;
- use it to illuminate a large frame;
- or place it behind a softbox designed for the fixture.
At that point, the final source the subject sees is the modifier, not the Fresnel lens itself.
Why panels are not simply “softboxes with LEDs inside”
This comparison is tempting but incomplete.
A panel does begin with a larger emitting area, which gives it some softness at close working distances. But a softbox creates a different optical system by spreading and homogenising the source across a larger diffusion surface.
A panel can also be modified, diffused, gridded or bounced.
So I would not think of a panel as a finished lighting look. It is simply a different starting geometry.
Which gives you better background separation?
A Fresnel usually gives you more direct control over spill, which can make it easier to keep the background darker or independently exposed.
That is useful when the subject is positioned close to the background or when the studio is small.
But separation does not depend only on the fixture type.
You can also separate the subject using:
- subject-to-background distance;
- brightness contrast;
- colour contrast;
- depth of field;
- practical lights;
- background lighting;
- or negative fill on the subject.
A tightly controlled beam is one tool among many.
What about catchlights?
The shape of the catchlight usually reflects the apparent source seen by the eye.
A bare panel may create a rectangular catchlight. A softbox can create a larger rectangular or octagonal reflection. A Fresnel used directly produces a smaller, more defined catchlight.
There is no universally correct catchlight shape.
It is simply another visual characteristic to consider, particularly in close interviews and portraits.
How does working distance affect the choice?
Working distance is one of the strongest practical arguments for a directional fixture.
If the light has to be several metres from the subject, a broad panel can become less efficient because much of its output may spread outside the useful area.
A Fresnel or focused point source can concentrate more of its available light where it is needed.
In a small interview studio, however, a panel’s broad source can be convenient because you may have enough output and not need the additional throw.
Again, the right choice comes from the physical space, not from a universal hierarchy between fixture types.
How important is colour quality for interviews?
Regardless of whether you choose a panel or Fresnel, colour quality matters enormously when photographing or filming people.
Colour temperature tells you approximately where the white point sits, but it does not tell you whether the fixture reproduces the full range of colours in skin accurately.
I would therefore pay attention to metrics such as R9 and TLCI in addition to headline CRI.
R9 is particularly relevant to human skin because it evaluates saturated red reproduction.

Do you need both a Fresnel and a panel?
Not necessarily.
This is where modular point-source fixtures become interesting.
If the fixture can accept different modifiers, one lighting engine can produce very different kinds of light.
You might use a large softbox for a broad interview key, then remove it and fit a more directional reflector or Fresnel for another setup.
This approach reduces the number of specialised fixtures required and can be especially useful for smaller production teams.

When a dedicated Fresnel is still the right tool
There are also situations where I would simply choose a dedicated Fresnel-style setup because that is exactly what the shot needs.
If I require:
- maximum directional control;
- a narrow beam;
- long throw;
- sharp shadow definition;
- or fast spot-to-flood adjustment;
a Fresnel remains a beautifully direct solution.
Modularity should not become an excuse to avoid specialised tools when the specialised tool is the best one for the job.
When a panel is still the right tool
Likewise, panels remain extremely useful.
If you need a broad source in a shallow studio space, want a very fast soft setup, need to illuminate more than one person or require a compact fixture with relatively even frontal coverage, a panel can be the simplest answer.
The fact that I personally work a lot with point-source fixtures does not make panels obsolete.
They simply solve a different problem.
So, should you choose a Fresnel LED or a panel LED for studio interviews?
I would think about it this way:
- Choose a panel when you want a broad source, fast setup, limited working distance and relatively soft coverage directly from the fixture.
- Choose a Fresnel when you need throw, beam control, spill management or a more directional source.
- Choose a modular point-source fixture when you want one lighting engine to move between soft and hard looks through different modifiers.
None of these approaches is universally better.
The strongest interview setup is the one that gives you the light quality you want while using the simplest combination of tools necessary to create it.
Think about the source, not the label
Ultimately, “panel” and “Fresnel” describe where the light starts.
What matters on camera is where it ends up: how large the apparent source becomes, where it is positioned, how much spill reaches the background and how the light shapes the face.
Once you begin thinking in those terms, choosing between fixtures becomes much easier.
