Choosing a professional bi-colour LED for video work is not simply a matter of buying the brightest fixture you can afford.
On a real production, the things that matter are usually more practical: how predictable the colour is, how much usable output survives your modifiers, how quickly the fixture rigs, how easily it integrates with the rest of your lighting package and whether it still makes sense once the production grows.
Maxima and Nanlite both make professional continuous LED fixtures, but they approach the market from different directions. Nanlite offers one of the broader ecosystems in the industry, while Maxima focuses on a smaller family of compact, high-performance continuous fixtures designed around photography, filmmaking and cross-compatible light shaping.
So the useful question is not “Which brand is better?”
It is: which system better fits the productions you actually shoot?

Maxima vs Nanlite: broad ecosystem or focused lighting system?
Nanlite’s biggest strength is breadth.
The company offers compact fixtures, larger Forza point sources, full-colour lights, tubes, panels and a wide range of modifiers and control options.
That makes Nanlite particularly attractive to production companies, owner-operators and rental environments that want many different fixture types within one ecosystem.
Maxima takes a narrower approach.
Rather than trying to cover every form factor, we focus primarily on professional point-source fixtures that can become very different kinds of light depending on the modifier attached.
For some productions, Nanlite’s breadth is the stronger proposition.
For others, especially smaller crews and hybrid photo/video teams, a more focused system can be easier to build around.
How should you compare output between bi-colour fixtures?
Very carefully.
This is one of the easiest parts of a lighting comparison to oversimplify.
Lux depends heavily on optics, beam angle and measurement distance. Lumens describe total luminous flux but not how that light is distributed. Wattage tells you how much power the fixture consumes, not necessarily how much useful light reaches the subject.
So I would not compare Maxima and Nanlite using one headline output number.
I would ask:
- How far will the fixture be from the subject?
- How large are the modifiers you use?
- Do you regularly work through heavy diffusion?
- Do you need to compete with daylight?
- Are you lighting a close interview, full-body fashion, a large commercial set or an exterior?
The most useful output is the output that remains after you shape the light the way the scene requires.
Why output headroom matters
More power is useful, but not simply because it makes the image brighter.
I tend to think of output as creative headroom.
If you have enough light available, you can afford to:
- use larger modifiers;
- push through additional diffusion;
- move the source farther away;
- maintain lower ISO;
- work at smaller apertures;
- or compete with stronger ambient light.
That is where higher-output fixtures become valuable.
But if most of your work consists of interviews, product photography or close portraiture, the largest possible fixture may simply add weight and complexity you do not need.
Does Maxima have better colour accuracy than Nanlite?
I would not make that claim across both brands.
Modern Nanlite fixtures publish strong colour-rendering specifications, and many of their professional products are clearly designed for serious cinema and commercial use.
Reducing the comparison to “Maxima is professional, Nanlite is prosumer” would be inaccurate.
For me, the more useful discussion is about which colour metrics matter for the work.
CRI is useful, but it is only one summary measurement.
For subjects involving skin, fashion, cosmetics and products, I also pay particular attention to R9, which evaluates saturated red reproduction.
Maxima Spectra, for example, has an R9 value of 97 and TLCI of 98.
Maxima Rapida achieves an R9 of 97.1 and TLCI of 98.
What I want from a professional light is predictable colour that gives the camera a strong starting point for grading, not simply the largest CRI number in a comparison table.
Why TLCI matters for video, but isn’t the whole story
TLCI is particularly useful for filmmakers because it evaluates how a source is likely to behave when recorded by a television or camera system.
A high TLCI score generally indicates that relatively little correction should be required.
But no single metric describes everything about a light source.
Spectral distribution, green-magenta behaviour, consistency throughout the CCT range and dimming stability can all matter on a demanding production.
That is why I would avoid choosing between Maxima and Nanlite purely on CRI or TLCI.
The specifications are useful filters. The actual workflow remains the more important test.
Bi-colour range: how much do you actually need?
Traditional photographic and cinematographic reference points are around 3200K for tungsten and 5600K for daylight, but real locations rarely fall neatly into those two values.
A wide bi-colour range gives you more freedom to match or deliberately separate your artificial lighting from the environment.
Both Spectra and Rapida cover 2600K to 6800K.
That additional range can be useful for very warm practicals, cooler ambient environments and intentionally introducing subtle colour contrast into a scene.
The important point is not simply how wide the range is, but how usable and predictable the source remains throughout it.
Nanlite’s advantage: more fixture types and full-colour options
Nanlite offers far more variety in this area.
Its catalogue includes bi-colour fixtures as well as RGB and multi-channel lights capable of saturated colour, gels, effects and advanced creative control.
If your work regularly requires colour effects, tubes, panels and multiple specialised form factors within one manufacturer ecosystem, Nanlite has a clear structural advantage.
Current Maxima fixtures are much more focused on high-quality tunable white light.
For interviews, commercial photography, fashion, product work and much narrative filmmaking, that can be exactly what is required.
But if full-colour lighting is central to your visual language, Nanlite may simply offer the more suitable range.
Accessory compatibility: where the systems differ
Nanlite has strong modifier compatibility, particularly through the widespread use of Bowens mount across many of its larger fixtures.
That gives users access to a huge range of Nanlite and third-party softboxes, reflectors, Fresnels and projection systems.
Smaller Nanlite fixtures may use the company’s compact FM mount, with adapters available in various configurations.
So it would be wrong to describe Nanlite as a closed system.
Maxima’s distinguishing feature is slightly different.
Current fixtures such as Spectra and Rapida are designed to work with both Profoto® and Bowens® compatible modifiers.
This becomes particularly interesting for photographers and mixed production teams that already own modifiers from more than one ecosystem.
Why Profoto compatibility can matter for video crews
At first glance, Profoto compatibility might sound more relevant to photographers than filmmakers.
But hybrid production has changed that distinction.
A fashion photographer who already owns a collection of Profoto umbrellas and reflectors may increasingly be asked to produce video during the same campaign.
Being able to place a continuous LED source behind a modifier the photographer already understands means the transition into motion does not require an entirely new lighting language.
That is one of the things I find especially valuable about Maxima’s approach.
The fixture can change while the photographer’s knowledge of light shaping remains useful.
Which system is easier to build into a larger lighting package?
If the goal is to build a very broad production package using one manufacturer, Nanlite has a strong advantage.
Its ecosystem gives you access to many fixture types and power classes, which makes it easier to stay inside a consistent family as productions scale.
Maxima’s approach is more specialised.
You may use Maxima as the core of a compact continuous-light package while still mixing in tools from other manufacturers when a production requires them.
I do not consider that a weakness.
Professional sets are already mixed environments.
The more relevant question is whether the fixture integrates smoothly with the grip, modifiers, batteries and control systems already around it.
Portability: compare fixtures, not logos
Nanlite makes very small portable lights as well as much larger fixtures, so there is no sensible brand-wide statement that Maxima or Nanlite is inherently more portable.
What I can say is that compactness is a major part of the current Maxima design philosophy.
Maxima Spectra weighs approximately 1.4 kg and supports direct V-Mount battery operation.
Maxima Rapida weighs approximately 1.8 kg and follows a similarly portable approach.
For documentary crews, interviews, location work and small commercial teams, that can matter enormously.
A light that takes seconds to move is sometimes more useful than a technically more capable fixture that requires heavier support and more rigging.
Battery operation and location work
Location production changes the priorities of a lighting package.
Power sockets may be inconvenient, cable runs may cross public spaces and the lighting position you want may be nowhere near mains electricity.
Direct battery operation removes many of those constraints.
For me, battery capability is not simply a portability feature. It changes where you are allowed to put the light.
That can matter far more creatively than the difference between two similar photometric specifications.
What about build quality?
I would be careful with this comparison too.
Maxima fixtures are designed and manufactured in Italy, which is an important part of our identity and production philosophy.
Nanlite manufactures at much greater scale and has a long track record of fixtures used in professional environments.
I would not claim that country of manufacture alone proves that one light will survive professional use better than another.
Durability depends on engineering, thermal design, materials, quality control, serviceability and the conditions in which the fixture is actually used.
Made in Italy is meaningful to Maxima, but it should not become a shortcut for dismissing another manufacturer’s build quality.
What about wireless control?
Nanlite has invested substantially in its NANLINK control ecosystem, allowing compatible fixtures to be managed remotely and organised into larger setups.
For productions using many fixtures, centralised control can be a genuine advantage.
Maxima’s workflow is generally more focused on straightforward fixture operation and compact physical setup.
For a small crew using two or three lights, that simplicity may be entirely appropriate.
For a studio or set running dozens of fixtures, a larger integrated control ecosystem can become much more important.
Where Nanlite may make more sense
I would look particularly closely at Nanlite if:
- you want a very broad range of fixture types;
- RGB or full-colour lighting is important;
- you are building a larger package around one manufacturer;
- Bowens compatibility already covers most of your modifier needs;
- you value a mature wireless control ecosystem;
- or you need many different price and power levels within the same brand.
Where Maxima may make more sense
I would consider Maxima particularly seriously if:
- you primarily work with high-quality tunable white light;
- your productions regularly move between photography and filmmaking;
- you already own Profoto® modifiers;
- you want both Profoto® and Bowens® modifier compatibility;
- compactness and battery operation are high priorities;
- or you prefer a smaller, specialised fixture family rather than a very broad ecosystem.
Where Maxima Spectra fits
If I were building a compact video kit around Maxima today, Spectra would be a logical starting point.
Its combination of 2600K to 6800K bi-colour control, approximately 1.4 kg weight, direct V-Mount operation, R9 97 and TLCI 98 makes it suitable for interviews, location commercial work, portraiture and hybrid production.
The modifier flexibility is equally important.
One fixture can become a large soft key, a reflector-based source or a more directional light depending on what is attached in front of it.
Where Maxima Rapida fits
Rapida is particularly useful when expanding into a compact multi-light package.
Its 2600K to 6800K range, approximately 1.8 kg weight, R9 97.1 and TLCI 98 make it well suited to key, fill, edge and background roles while remaining easy to move on location.
For small crews, several compact fixtures can sometimes create a more flexible package than one very large light.
When does Furiosa become relevant?
Maxima Furiosa becomes relevant when you need substantially more output and lighting headroom.
That includes larger diffusion, longer working distances, full-body commercial work and situations where artificial light needs to compete with strong daylight.
I would not choose it simply because it is the larger Maxima fixture.
The right light is the one that gives you enough output for the shot without adding unnecessary complexity to the package.
So, is Maxima better than Nanlite for video?
No universal answer would be useful.
Nanlite offers a broad and mature professional lighting ecosystem with many fixture types, strong Bowens compatibility, full-colour options and extensive control possibilities.
Maxima offers a more specialised system centred on high-quality tunable white light, compact professional fixtures and unusual compatibility across both Profoto® and Bowens® modifier ecosystems.
If you want to build almost your entire lighting package within one broad manufacturer family, Nanlite may make more sense.
If you are building a compact professional kit, regularly move between photography and video, or already own Profoto modifiers you would like to keep using, Maxima may fit the workflow more naturally.
The right comparison starts with the production, not the brand
Before choosing between Maxima, Nanlite or any other lighting manufacturer, I would look at the productions you shoot most often.
How many fixtures are normally on set? Do you need RGB? Do your lights travel constantly? Which modifiers do you already own? How often do you work from batteries? How much output do your typical diffusion setups actually require?
Those answers will tell you much more than a generic “winner” in a brand comparison.
