Bi-colour lighting can help create depth in flat lay photography, but colour temperature is only one part of the equation. The strongest sense of dimension comes from light direction, shadow, contrast and texture. What actually creates depth in flat lay photography?
Flat lay photography is shot from above, so you lose many of the perspective cues that normally make an image feel three-dimensional. Lighting therefore becomes one of the main ways to create depth.
The most important factors are:
- Light direction: A source coming from the side creates visible shadows and gives objects physical shape.
- Light-to-fill ratio: Keeping some shadow density preserves dimension instead of flattening the frame.
- Source size: A larger source creates softer transitions, while a smaller or more distant source creates harder, more graphic shadows.
- Surface texture: Raking light reveals weave, grain, embossing and fine detail.
- Specular reflections: Controlled highlights help glossy or metallic materials read as three-dimensional.
Colour temperature can then be used to support these choices rather than replace them.
How can bi-colour lighting add visual separation?
A bi-colour fixture lets you shift the warmth or coolness of the light without gels. In flat lay photography, this can be useful when you want the key light to feel slightly warmer or cooler than the ambient light or fill.
For example, a warm key combined with a slightly cooler ambient contribution can create subtle colour separation between highlights and shadows. The effect should usually be restrained. A small difference can add atmosphere without making the image look artificially split between orange and blue.
The important point is that the colour difference supports the existing shape created by light direction and contrast.
What is the best position for a flat lay key light?
A good starting point is to place the key light roughly 30 to 45 degrees above the tabletop rather than directly overhead.
This creates shadows that extend across the surface and reveal the height, shape and texture of the objects in the composition. A very low raking angle can emphasise texture dramatically, while raising the source produces a softer, more commercial look.
Moving the source sideways also changes the direction of the shadows, which can be used compositionally to guide the viewer’s eye through the frame.
Should you use one or two lights for flat lay photography?
One well-controlled light can be enough.
A single key light positioned from the side, combined with a white reflector or bounce card on the opposite side, gives you a simple setup with strong control over shadow depth.
Two fixtures become useful when you need more independent control. You can use one as the main directional key and the second as a gentle fill or accent, but the goal should not be to eliminate the shadows created by the key.
If both sources are equally strong and positioned symmetrically, the image can quickly become flat.
Should the two lights use different colour temperatures?
They can, but they do not have to.
For accurate product photography, using the same colour temperature across both sources is often preferable because it keeps colours neutral and predictable.
For more editorial, food or lifestyle-oriented imagery, a small difference between key and fill can introduce additional atmosphere. For example, you might use a slightly warmer key and a more neutral fill.
The difference does not need to be dramatic. Even a few hundred Kelvin can create a perceptible tonal shift without introducing an obvious colour cast.
How does bi-colour lighting help with different materials?
Different materials respond very differently to light, and adjustable colour temperature can help you refine their appearance.
- Food and wood: Slightly warmer light can reinforce natural warm tones.
- White packaging: Neutral or daylight-balanced light helps maintain clean whites.
- Metal and glass: Direction and reflection control matter more than colour temperature, but bi-colour control can help match surrounding practical or ambient light.
- Textiles: Raking light reveals texture, while colour temperature can subtly influence how warm or cool the material feels.
For colour-critical commercial work, accurate spectral reproduction remains more important than deliberately warming or cooling the fixture.
How do you avoid making a flat lay look too flat?
The most common mistake is lighting the entire scene evenly from directly above.
That may produce correct exposure, but it removes many of the visual cues that give the objects shape.
Instead:
- move the key light to one side;
- allow shadows to remain visible;
- use fill only to control their density;
- bring the key closer for softer transitions;
- lower the source when you want to reveal more texture;
- use flags or negative fill when the room itself is bouncing too much light back into the scene.
The objective is not necessarily dramatic contrast. It is simply enough variation across the frame for the eye to understand the physical form of the objects.
