Light ratios sound technical, but the underlying idea is very simple: how bright do you want the illuminated side of a face to be compared with the shadow side?

That relationship determines how much dimension, contrast and shadow detail a portrait has.

The important thing is that a ratio is not a recipe. A 2:1, 3:1 or 4:1 lighting ratio does not automatically make a portrait commercial, cinematic or dramatic. Source size, direction, distance, skin, background, exposure and the shape of the subject’s face all influence how that contrast actually looks.

For me, ratios are most useful as a way of describing and repeating a lighting decision, rather than as numbers you should try to hit before looking at the person in front of the camera.

What is a light ratio in portrait photography?

In the broadest sense, a lighting ratio describes the difference in illumination between the brighter and darker parts of the subject.

In a conventional portrait setup, this is often discussed in terms of a key light and a fill light.

The key creates the primary direction and modelling of the face. The fill determines how much of the key’s shadow remains visible.

More fill produces a lower-contrast image.

Less fill produces deeper shadows and a higher-contrast image.

That is really the concept.

Why can lighting-ratio numbers become confusing?

Because not everyone uses exactly the same measurement convention.

Some photographers describe the relationship between the key and fill sources themselves. Others describe the ratio between the illuminated side of the face and the shadow side, where the brighter side may be receiving both key and fill simultaneously.

Those are not mathematically identical measurements.

This is why I would be careful about memorising statements such as “one stop always equals this ratio” without knowing exactly what is being measured.

In practical portrait work, the more useful question is often:

How much shadow do I want to retain?

Do you actually need to measure a lighting ratio?

Not always.

Experienced portrait photographers often work visually because they already understand how changes in fill affect the face.

A light meter becomes particularly useful when:

  • you need to reproduce a setup later;
  • several photographers or assistants are working from the same lighting plan;
  • you are photographing a large series that needs to remain consistent;
  • you are matching several sets;
  • or you simply want a repeatable technical reference.

The meter gives you a number.

The face still tells you whether the number is right.

What does a low lighting ratio look like?

A relatively low-contrast setup means the shadow side of the face receives a significant amount of fill.

This can create:

  • open shadows;
  • visible detail across the whole face;
  • a clean commercial feeling;
  • and relatively gentle transitions between light and dark.

This can work beautifully for beauty, corporate portraiture, catalogue photography and other situations where clarity and openness are important.

But I would avoid saying that low ratios are automatically “flat” or bad.

Flatness depends on direction, source size, face shape and many other variables.

A low-contrast portrait can still have beautiful dimensionality.

What does a higher lighting ratio look like?

As the amount of fill decreases, the shadow side becomes darker relative to the key side.

This can create:

  • stronger facial modelling;
  • more visible shadow structure;
  • greater separation between lit and unlit planes;
  • and a more graphic or dramatic image.

That can work extremely well for fashion, editorial portraits, character studies and more cinematic photography.

But again, the ratio itself does not create the style.

A large soft source with very little fill produces a very different portrait from a small hard source with the same measured contrast relationship.

Source size matters as much as ratio

This is one of the reasons lighting ratios should never be considered in isolation.

Imagine two portraits with exactly the same measured difference between highlight and shadow.

One uses a huge softbox close to the subject. The other uses a small hard reflector several metres away.

The measured contrast may be similar, but the photographs will look completely different.

The large source creates gradual shadow transitions.

The smaller source creates sharper transitions and more defined texture.

So the ratio tells you how much contrast you have. It does not tell you what that contrast looks like.

Direction matters too

Moving the key light around the subject changes which parts of the face receive light and which fall into shadow.

A frontal source may produce relatively little modelling even with minimal fill.

A source positioned farther around the side can create substantially more shadow structure without changing its output at all.

This is why I would always establish:

  1. direction;
  2. source size;
  3. distance;
  4. and modifier;

before becoming obsessed with the numerical ratio.

Do you even need a fill light?

No.

The word “fill” describes a function, not necessarily another fixture.

Fill can come from:

  • a second light;
  • a white reflector;
  • a wall;
  • the room itself;
  • a large floor bounce;
  • or ambient daylight.

You can also do the opposite and use negative fill to remove reflected light from the shadow side.

That is often one of the most elegant ways to increase contrast.

Why negative fill can be more useful than reducing the fill light

In a white studio, the room itself may be filling the shadows whether you want it to or not.

Light from the key bounces from walls, ceiling and floor and returns to the face.

Turning off your fill fixture may therefore not create much additional contrast.

Placing black fabric or a black flag near the shadow side absorbs that reflected light.

You have changed the lighting ratio without touching the key at all.

This is one of the reasons I think of contrast as an environmental property rather than simply a relationship between two dimmer settings.

Where does bi-colour lighting come into this?

This is where the original question becomes interesting.

Bi-colour control does not create the lighting ratio.

Intensity creates the ratio.

Bi-colour gives you another independent variable: the colour relationship between the sources.

That means you can control:

  • how bright the key is relative to the fill;
  • and independently decide how warm or cool each source should appear.

Those are two different creative decisions.

Do key and fill need to have the same colour temperature?

No.

This is one of the claims in the original article that I would strongly change.

A warm key and cooler fill do not automatically represent a mistake.

They can be a deliberate creative choice.

You might use:

  • a slightly warm key against a more neutral fill;
  • a neutral key with cooler ambient fill from a window;
  • or a warmer background environment while keeping the face relatively neutral.

What matters is whether the relationship is intentional.

Bi-colour fixtures make this easier because you can adjust the white-light relationship without adding gels.

Does 3200K create a warmer portrait than 5600K?

Not necessarily.

This is another important concept.

If the fixture is set to 3200K and the camera white balance is also set to 3200K, the light can appear relatively neutral.

If that same 3200K source is photographed with the camera balanced to 5600K, it will appear much warmer.

So the visual result comes from the relationship between:

  • source CCT;
  • camera white balance;
  • and other sources in the scene.

Kelvin is not a mood control by itself.

Can colour contrast replace brightness contrast?

Sometimes it can contribute to separation.

A portrait does not need to rely only on brighter-versus-darker relationships.

You can also create separation through:

  • warm versus cool;
  • saturated versus neutral;
  • soft versus hard;
  • sharp versus out of focus;
  • or subject colour against background colour.

This means a relatively gentle lighting ratio can still produce a visually rich image when other forms of contrast are present.

What ratio should you use for beauty photography?

I would not prescribe one.

Beauty often benefits from open shadows, but the correct amount depends on:

  • skin texture;
  • makeup;
  • the size and position of the key;
  • the desired retouching style;
  • and the visual identity of the campaign.

I would normally begin with a relatively controlled, open shadow and then decide whether the face needs more modelling.

The image should determine the ratio, not the other way around.

What about fashion and editorial portraits?

Fashion often gives you more freedom to use shadow as a graphic element.

You may want much less fill, harder light or even areas of the face deliberately approaching black.

But there is no reason an editorial fashion portrait cannot also use extremely low contrast.

Again, the ratio is a descriptive tool, not a genre preset.

How should you expose darker skin?

I would not choose a lighting ratio according to skin tone alone.

What matters is preserving the tonal and colour information required by the image.

Deeper skin tones can look extraordinary under high-contrast lighting, but exposure and spectral quality become particularly important because you still want meaningful information in the shadows where the image requires it.

I would evaluate the face itself, protect highlights appropriately and make sure the source reproduces colour well.

For this kind of work, measurements such as R9 can provide useful additional information about saturated red reproduction.

How can you set a ratio using a reflector?

A reflector is an excellent fill source.

Start with the key light, then bring the reflector closer to the shadow side until you have the amount of fill you want.

Move it farther away to increase contrast.

You can also change:

  • reflector size;
  • surface;
  • angle;
  • and position.

A silver reflector behaves very differently from a broad white surface.

This gives you enormous control without adding another powered fixture.

What if you use a second LED as fill?

A powered fill gives you independent control over intensity and colour temperature.

This can be particularly useful when you need to reproduce the setup precisely.

You can document:

  • key output;
  • fill output;
  • CCT;
  • distance;
  • modifier;
  • and subject position.

That makes the setup much easier to reconstruct later.

Where Maxima Spectra fits into portrait lighting

With its 2600K to 6800K range, R9 97.1 and TLCI 98, Rapida can work as either key or fill while allowing intensity and colour temperature to be controlled independently.

For example, one fixture might create a large soft key while another provides a subtle amount of fill, edge or background light.

The important point is that the fixtures do not have predetermined roles.

Do you need two identical fixtures?

No.

If key and fill are performing very different jobs, they do not necessarily need identical power or optics.

A large key may need far more output because it is passing through a large modifier.

The fill may simply be a compact bounced source or reflector.

What matters is whether the complete lighting system creates the contrast relationship you want.

How do you make a portrait setup repeatable?

If consistency matters, document the geometry as well as the dimmer settings.

I would record:

  • fixture position;
  • subject distance;
  • height;
  • angle;
  • modifier;
  • dimming level;
  • CCT;
  • reflector or negative-fill position;
  • and camera exposure.

A dimmer setting by itself does not reproduce a lighting ratio if the source has moved.

Distance can change illumination dramatically.

What is the most common mistake with lighting ratios?

Chasing the number instead of looking at the portrait.

You can meter an academically perfect ratio and still produce a bad photograph.

The shadow may be in the wrong place. The source may be too hard. The catchlight may be unattractive. The fill may be destroying the mood. The background may make the contrast feel completely different.

The ratio is information.

It is not the image.

So, what role do light ratios play in professional portrait lighting?

They give you a way to understand, communicate and repeat contrast.

That is extremely useful.

But the creative decision should still begin with the face.

Decide how much modelling you want. Decide how soft or hard the transitions should be. Decide whether the shadows should remain open or become graphic. Then use fill, negative fill and meter readings to make that decision repeatable.

Bi-colour control adds another layer by allowing the colour relationship between those sources to be adjusted independently from their intensity.

Ratios describe the portrait. They should not dictate it.

This is probably the simplest way I would put it.

A lighting ratio is a very useful technical language, particularly when a setup has to be repeated.

But there is no universally correct 2:1, 3:1 or 4:1 portrait.

The best ratio is simply the one that creates the face, mood and visual hierarchy the photograph needs.
